“Shining brighter and brighter”. Proverbs 4:18

Our school vision, “Shining Brighter and Brighter,” reflects the message of Proverbs 4. This chapter encourages us to seek wisdom, make good choices and follow the path of light. As we learn and grow in knowledge, character and kindness, we are encouraged to use what we learn wisely so that we can flourish, help others to flourish and make a positive difference within our community and beyond.

What does our vision mean to us?

As a school community, we have explored what it means to “shine brighter and brighter” and, in particular, the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

We understand that knowledge is the collection of facts and information that we learn, while wisdom is the ability to use that knowledge to make good judgements and choices. We introduced this to the children through a simple example:

“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad!”

We then encouraged our children to think of their own examples of knowledge becoming wisdom. Their ideas included:

“Knowledge is knowing that getting too hot can make you feel unwell; wisdom is wearing a hat, sitting in the shade and drinking lots of water on a hot day.”

“Knowledge is knowing that kindness is good; wisdom is carrying out a kind act, even when it’s hard.”

These conversations help our children understand that shining brighter and brighter is not simply about knowing more. It is about what we do with what we know. We grow in wisdom when we reflect on our learning and experiences and use them to make thoughtful, courageous and compassionate choices.

Our vision therefore has meaning for every member of our school community. Each child is encouraged to connect it to their own story, recognising their individual gifts, experiences and potential. There is no single way to shine: children may shine through their learning, their character, their relationships, their creativity, their resilience, their faith or the difference they make to someone else.

As we gain knowledge, develop wisdom, learn from our experiences and make choices guided by our values, we continue along our own paths of “shining brighter and brighter” — helping ourselves and one another to flourish.
