Welcome to our Year 6 page! We have an exciting year ahead, with plenty of opportunities for children to learn, grow and take on new responsibilities. As the oldest children in the school, we will be encouraging them to become increasingly independent, resilient and confident, while also making the most of everything Year 6 has to offer.

There will be lots of exciting learning across the curriculum, from developing our reading and writing in English and tackling increasingly challenging problems in Maths, to investigating the past in History, exploring the world around us in Science and Geography, and developing our understanding through RE, Art, Computing and more.

As we work towards the end of Key Stage 2 and the SATs in May, we will build knowledge and confidence steadily through our everyday lessons, whilst making sure that Year 6 is a happy, memorable and enjoyable year.

Homework:

Homework will be set using Google Classroom each Thursday and is due in on Tuesday. Homework will focus on reading, spelling and Maths, supporting the learning taking place in class and helping children to develop the independence expected in Year 6.

Reading:

Children should read at least 5 times each week, either independently or with an adult. Reading can include their school reading book, a book from home, newspapers, magazines or other age-appropriate texts. Please talk to your child about what they are reading, ask them questions about the text and encourage them to explain unfamiliar vocabulary. Regular reading is particularly important in Year 6 as children develop the comprehension and vocabulary skills they need for their end-of-key-stage assessments.

Key Vocabulary:

As we encounter new vocabulary across the curriculum, we will encourage children to understand and use it confidently. Families can support this by asking children to explain new words and use them in their own sentences.

English: atmosphere, characterisation, inference, perspective
Maths: factor, multiple, prime, quotient, area
Science: classification, organism, species, vertebrate

PE lessons will be on Thursday and Friday.

Colouring pencils
Children's books suitable for Year 6
