Sports Premium

In April 2013, the Government announced a special fund called the Sports Premium that would be provided to schools in order to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision.

Funding is allocated to all maintained and state-funded schools with primary phase pupils. In 2022/2023 our Sports Premium allocation was £17,520

Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

Examples of how we are making effective use of PE and sport funding at St Mary’s include:

  • Employing a member of staff who specialises in teaching PE
  • Providing external specialist PE coaches to lead lead some lessons and extra-curricular activities.
  • Utilising our PE coach's specialist knowledge to work alongside teachers in lessons to increase their subject knowledge and confidence in PE.
  • Procuring quality-assured professional training for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport.
  • Buying into existing local sports networks such as the Dacorum School Sports Network.
  • Providing places for pupils in after-school sport clubs and holiday courses.
  • Engaging the least active pupils in extra-curricular activities.
  • Forging links with local secondary schools to help primary staff improve their PE and sports provision.

Please see the attached documents for a detailed summary and breakdown of the sports premium spending and impact.
