Our very own Miss Gray has been given a Silver Award as a "Lockdown Hero" by the Pearson National Teaching Awards. We held a surprise ceremony for her on Wednesday 23rd June. Her wonderful year 2 class, staff, parents, governors and even Councillor Terry Douris and MP Gagan Mohindra attended the socially distanced secret event.
She was expecting to lead our celebration assembly, appearing as one of her characters, Story Tellin' Pete, to read out thank you letters from children to their teachers and support staff to celebrate "National Thank a Teacher Day". Instead, she walked into the hall to be greeted by a host of VIPs!
Mrs Osborne and Owen Lewis, Chair of the Governors, shared some kind words about Miss Gray before we watched a montage of some of the "best bits" from her lockdown videos. MP Gagan Mohindra and Councillor Terry Douris presented her with her trophy and certificate before the children in her class shared some of their favourite pirate jokes - something they did during lockdown.
She has been invited to attend a Silver Winners afternoon tea at the National Gallery in September and the UK Award Ceremony in November. As a Silver Winner, Miss Gray is now in the running for the Gold Award in a field of 12 very worthy opponents. You find out more here. The overall winner will be announced in the Autumn.
We are so proud that Miss Gray, and all of the staff at St Mary's, were able to make such positive contributions to our community during such a difficult time. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, we are never alone and joy can be shared.
